Food and Drink in Kefalonia, Cephalonia, Kefallinia - Vegetarian
The line from 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding'...

'He don't eat no MEAT?! - That's OK, I'll fix lamb'

...is still not that wide of the mark, and despite the fact that some religious Greeks may give up meat entirely either for Lent or before Christmas, most tavernas do not understand the concept of vegetarianism.

However, the standard Greek menu will usually incorporate dishes such as dolmades (stuffed vine leaves) fried banana peppers, various bean dishes, strapatsada (tomato and pepper), horta (greens), boiled or fried courgettes and so forth.

Whilst they may not be dishes to set the world on fire, at least there is usually something to fall back on and ward off starvation. And of course there are are the salads - particularly horiatiki (Greek), with or without feta.

Attitudes are changing, though, and some restaurants now make a point of highlighting their vegetarian-friendly dishes.

Notable amongst these is 'Porta', on the left hand side of the main road leading from the square in Argostoli towards the Naval Academy.
