Rising
straight out of the stunning Ionian sea it is difficult to
believe that Mount Aenos reaches the dizzy height of 1627m
(5338ft), higher even than Ben Nevis.
As
such a trip to its upland woods affords the visitor cooling
breezes even on the most tropical of days at sea level, and
a chance to admire the 'unique' (it is said) 'black' pines
which are protected by the National Park status which the
mountain has been granted.
Don't
expect a great road surface, though, as the track gets worse
the higher you go, and an off-road vehicle may be advisable
if you want to get all the way up to the summit.
You
can probably get up into the woods with their English-style
picnic areas in an ordinary vehicle, but BEWARE... there is
a military communications installation half way up... so NO
CAMERAS.
