The
Katavothres amount to little more than a geological curiosity
which those left cold by such matters may well think a wasted
trip, but being so close to Argostoli must be worth a brief
visit.
At
this peculiar place the sea disappears into the land, and
while it is nowadays (since the earthquake) a shadow of its
former self, at one time it was said to be powerful enough
to drive a waterwheel. For years it was a mystery as to where
the water went, but the enterprising use of dyes have established
that the water turns up some time later in the underground
Melissani Lake on the opposite side of the island.
A
visit can now be combined with a drink at the swanky bar/restaurant
which has recently been opened.
