Kastro,
the ruined castle which dominates the road south from Argostoli,
is all that remains of what was the medieval venetian capital
of Kefalonia. At its height the town had a population of 15,000,
but was largely destroyed, as is the way on this island, by
a massive earthquake in the 17th century.
What
is left is worth a visit, not least for the views from the
ramparts, which Lord Byron is said to have particularly admired,
and a few bars and tavernas cater for the burning thirsts
of those enthusiastic enough to have walked up the steep approaches.
