If
you have the time, or have exhausted the attractions Kefalonia
offers, then Ithaca is well worth a day trip... only don't
make the trip on the promise of relics from the day's of Odysseus...
because there aren't any!
Nor,
incidentally, are there beaches of the quality to which you
will have become accustomed, (tar has even been found on occasion),
and the ferry drops you miles from anywhere.
But
if you get over these obstacles Ithaca has plenty of charm,
not least the peace and quiet which its relative isolation
guarantees. Whether you head south from the ferry to Vathi,
the sleepy capital, or head north towards Kioni and Frikes,
you will have the road virtually to yourself.
A
particular favourite of ours is Anoyi, where a truly remarkable
Kafenion dominates the tiny village square, and from which
you may buy a variety of tinned goods (including spam?) as
well as your Amstel and frappes.
