Thankfully
McDonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken have yet to make their
debut in Kefalonia, but the reasons for this are unclear.
It may be that Greece is not ready for this giant step towards
America, or it maybe that all the suitable locations have
already been snapped up by kebab joints.
In
particular Argostoli has several such operations, all of whom
offer doner kebabs (called Gyros here) in chicken or pork
flavours, as well as souvlakis, salads and other grilled meats.
Whilst
the food does not suit our particular tastes, we nevertheless
make regular visits to Megas, at the bridge end of the fruit
market in Argostoli. We go as much to be entertained by the
owner Vaggelis as for the fare, but for those who care for
such food, all of these places are great value for money.
In
Argostoli, there is one notable alternative for a quick food
fix - Tsivras on the side street opposite the petrol station
in the middle of the fruit market. This is a traditional Greek
restaurant - all the days dishes are oven-cooked and therefore
ready to be served. Simply go up to the counter and let the
staff talk you through today's selection, and then either sit
down at your table of choice or get your food bagged up for
take-away.

Tsivras
is always busy (though open lunchtimes only), and this is
hardly surprising. The brothers who own it have a justified
reputation for good cooking, and the prices take a lot of
beating.
