Argostoli
isn't the sort of cultural centre of Kefalonia that one might
hope for, but it does have a couple of worthwhile museums
(the historical and the archaeological), and if churches are
your thing, then there are countless gems, all dripping with
golden decoration and orthodox pomp.
But
'culture' is only one of the attractions that the island capital
holds, because as a functioning Greek town it remains relatively
free of the tourist dollar, and for the Greekophile its a
charming place to wander around, with an incongruous variety
of shops and bars, from the designer label outlets and smart
italian style cafes to back street butchers, kebab outlets
and the occasional kafeneion.
It
also makes an interesting evening destination where people
watchers could do worse than park themselves in the square,
and foodies have a decent selection of eateries to choose
from, particularly if you are prepared to explore a little.
