As
Kefalonia's capital town, Argostoli has a life of its own without
exclusive dependence on tourism, lending it a genuinely Greek
atmosphere which will appeal to many travellers. The downside
is that the pressures of working life can make it a little less
relaxed than elsewhere on the island (the traffic is frequently
gridlocked on the harbour front!), and the architecture is uninspiring
(although much improved over the last decade).
As
the capital though, it boasts the best shops - including a
surprising number of designer outlets - and the widest selection
of restaurants, tavernas, coffee bars (not kafenions for the
most part) and busy cocktail emporia. It is particularly busy
in the evening when the locals swarm down the main shopping
street and over the square on their 'volta', and is ideal
for the keen person-watcher.
There
are plenty of hotels, mostly Greek in style rather than tourist
oriented, though few holiday studios. For many people, though,
the access to transport (Kefalonia's main bus station is of
course here), and the proximity of Lassi and its beaches makes
it a great base, not least because you have access to a good
range of food at night without resorting to taxis.
